Can Corten Steel Be Used Near the Ocean?

Corten steel performs poorly in direct coastal environments. Within 1–2 km of the ocean, salt spray prevents the protective patina from stabilizing, causing accelerated corrosion instead of the expected self-healing oxide layer. This is the single most important limitation buyers need to understand.
Why corten fails near saltwater
The weathering steel patina relies on wet-dry cycling to form a dense, adherent oxide layer. Chloride ions from sea salt penetrate this layer and prevent it from becoming protective. Instead of stabilizing, the rust continues to grow and flake — behaving like ordinary mild steel.

- 316 stainless steel: For structural elements near the coast, stainless is the correct specification.
