Is Corten Steel Safe for Growing Food and Vegetables?

Corten steel is generally considered safe for growing edible plants. The iron oxide (rust) that forms on the surface is not toxic to plants or humans. However, there are practical considerations buyers should understand before specifying corten raised beds for food production.
Is rust toxic to plants?
No. Iron oxide is a naturally occurring compound in most soils. Plants actually need iron as a micronutrient. The small amount of iron that leaches from corten walls into soil is negligible compared to what already exists in garden soil. Multiple university studies confirm no measurable increase in heavy metals in soil adjacent to weathering steel structures.
What about the alloying elements?
Corten steel contains small amounts of copper (0.25–0.55%), chromium (0.30–1.25%) and nickel (0.12–0.40%). These are bound within the steel matrix and do not leach into soil in meaningful quantities. The concentrations are far below levels that would affect plant growth or food safety.
Best practices for food-growing corten beds
- Use a liner for acidic soils: If your soil pH is below 5.5, consider a root barrier liner to minimize any theoretical leaching.
- Drainage holes: Ensure adequate drainage to prevent waterlogging, which is bad for both plants and steel longevity.
- Depth: For root vegetables, specify minimum 400mm internal depth. For herbs and leafy greens, 250–300mm is sufficient.
- No galvanized components: If using corten for food growing, avoid galvanized bolts or fittings inside the bed — zinc is more concerning than iron for food safety.
