Specifying Corten Steel: A Technical Guide for Architects and Engineers

Specifying corten steel correctly ensures project success and client satisfaction. This guide covers the essential technical parameters architects and structural engineers need when incorporating weathering steel into their designs.
Material Grades and Standards
Corten steel is available in two primary grades. Corten A (ASTM A242) suits structural applications with thicknesses up to 12mm. Corten B (ASTM A588) handles heavier structural loads and is available in thicknesses up to 100mm. European equivalents include S355J0WP and S355J2W.
Thickness Selection
Decorative Applications
For non-structural elements like screens, signage, and facade cladding, 2-3mm thickness provides adequate rigidity while minimizing weight. Laser cutting works optimally at these gauges.
Structural Elements
Planters, retaining walls, and load-bearing features typically require 4-6mm minimum. Large-scale installations may need 8-10mm with internal reinforcement.
Detailing for Longevity
Proper detailing prevents premature failure. Key principles include avoiding water traps where moisture accumulates, providing drainage holes in enclosed forms, and maintaining air circulation around all surfaces to promote even patina development.
Welding and Fabrication
Corten steel welds using standard MIG/TIG processes with matching weathering steel filler wire. All welds develop the same protective patina as the parent material. For architectural-grade finishes, welds should be ground smooth before weathering begins.
Accelerated Weathering
Projects requiring immediate patina appearance can use chemical accelerants. A solution of hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, and salt applied to clean steel produces visible oxidation within hours. Multiple applications over 2-3 days create a mature-looking finish.
