Does Corten Steel Stain Concrete and Surrounding Surfaces?

Yes. Corten steel produces rust run-off that stains concrete, stone, timber and light-colored surfaces. This is the most common complaint from end users and the most frequently overlooked issue in project specifications. Proper detailing eliminates the problem.
What causes the staining
During the active patina phase (first 6–18 months), loose iron oxide particles wash off the surface with rain. This orange-brown water drips onto whatever is below — paving, walls, timber decking, or adjacent render. Once the patina stabilizes, run-off reduces significantly but never stops completely in heavy rain.
How to prevent staining
- Drip edge / flashing: Add a small zinc or stainless steel drip edge at the base of corten panels to direct water away from paving.
- Gravel strip: Install a 200–300mm gravel strip below planters or screens to absorb run-off before it reaches concrete.
- Sealant on adjacent surfaces: Apply a penetrating concrete sealer to paving within 500mm of corten elements.
- Pre-weathering: Factory pre-weathered corten produces far less run-off than raw steel because the loose oxide layer is already removed.
- Liner or standoff: For planters on timber decks, use rubber feet or a drip tray to create separation.
Can rust stains be removed?
Yes, but it depends on the surface. Oxalic acid-based cleaners (sold as “rust remover” or “concrete rust stain remover”) work well on concrete and natural stone. Timber may need sanding. Prevention is always cheaper than remediation — specify detailing at the design stage.
